The University of Minnesota Law School Law Library houses one of the most diverse and prestigious collections of rare books and historical manuscripts in the United States. The collection includes an original intact copy of Poor Richard's Almanack, an early printing of the Magna Carta, as well as a comprehensive collection of Native American history and treaties.

The collection is a valuable resource for the law community, as it tracks the history of law and legislation, from today to pre-colonial America and Europe. With the recent renovation of the Law School facilities, a controlled-atmosphere secure vault and gallery were created for the collection, and its funding came entirely from private contributors. Many of these contributors have used the collection in their research, and some have donated or helped to purchase invaluable materials. To keep the close-knit circle of library supporters informed, and to recognize their support, the Rare Books Collection approached us with the need for a newsletter. The Colophon includes articles on recent additions to the library, as well as features by distinguished historians and scholars.

Eaton & Associates developed a newsletter that is both cost-effective to produce, as well as a lasting resource for the library's patrons. The Colophon is designed to honor the history represented in the collection, typography and ornamentation that recall 18th Century book design, with an unorthodox cover design -- the cover presents a table of contents for each issue, and the publication becomes a part of each patron's own valued collection. The first issue of The Colophon launched in Spring 2003.
