Lifeworks Services, Inc. is a Minneapolis-based non-profit organization,
dedicated to serving the needs of people with developmental disabilities.
"At Lifeworks, we specialize in career and life planning, helping the people
we serve explore the possibilities and map a course for the future. We pull
together the people closest to each individual to define the dream, name the
steps to achieve it, pledge active support, and celebrate each step along
the way" - 1997 Annual Report
Our relationship
Eaton & Associates has worked closely with Lifeworks since 1989, developing
their name, logo, identity system, marketing- communications literature,
and annual reports. We appreciate our relationship with Lifeworks, both
as a long-standing client that values our work, and as an established
advocate of developmentally disabled individuals. Lifeworks recognizes
that their audience has special needs and interests. They work with us to
tailor their communication materials appropriately.
The communication objective for www.lifeworks.org
Our work began with a prepared questionnaire to help the client determine a
criteria for developing a web presence. The resulting objectives emerged; the
site should provide general information about the organization, make primary or
secondary contact with interested people and give them a method to make further
inquiries. It must reinforce the identity system, make a positive impact on the user,
and reflect the style with which Lifeworks communicates with its audience: in clear,
concise, everyday language.
The audience
We defined two groups of users for this web site: people with disabilities seeking
employment (or family members acting on their behalf), and employers seeking qualified
workers. When using the web site, the viewer must make a choice between the "client
network" and the "employer network". The choices for each group are different, and
clearly organized. The overall tone of the site is friendly, professional, and
enhanced by snapshots of Lifeworks clients and personal testimonials.
The site was launched in late December of 1999 with first tier information.
Development continues with the second tier implementation scheduled for completion by
end of first quarter 2000. On going, various Lifeworksı staff members will maintain
the site, using templates and formats that we provide. We plan to train these
individuals on how to maintain and update information, and we will assist Lifeworks
in directing the right audiences to their site.
The client's goal
The goal and expectation of Lifeworks, is a new influx of clients seeking employment
and many new relationships with employers, "...fostering a new understanding of people
with developmental disabilities so that they are welcomed and included and their
contributions valued."
Eaton & Associates responsibilities-- included domain name registration, the communication criteria- questionnaire, site schematic, navigational tools, site design and development, html programming, on-going maintenance, and advertising strategies.
